PROSTHODONTICS
Prosthodontics is a specialty branch of dentistry based on the replacement and restoration of the teeth, gums and jawbone. Dentists may refer patients to a prosthodontist for a number of reasons, including for cosmetic or restorative purposes. Also referred to as prosthetic dentists, prosthodontists are primarily consulted for the treatment planning, design and fitting of artificial teeth and other parts of the mouth.
A prosthodontist’s goal is to provide patients with a smile that is both visually appealing and functionally efficient. Treatment is always determined based on each patient’s individual needs and long term oral health goals. When possible, a prosthodontist will restore the teeth while preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible. When the natural teeth cannot be saved, it is the job of a prosthodontist to provide the most natural looking and functioning prosthetics as possible.
